Episode 7 - Olympic Surfing
In his Episode, Host and surfer Ian Simpson is joined by Co-Host and surfer Keith Davies who between them have lived and surfed in Japan “a long time “ !! Keith lives very close to Tsurigasaki beach, known to the locals as “Shida Beach” which will be the venue for the very first Olympic surfing event.
In this episode Ian and Keith look in detail at Shida beach and the kind of waves it produces. They discuss the topography of the wave shelf and the beach area to be used for spectating. In addition there is lots of talk about the summer typhoon season in Japan and the likely effect it could have on the Olympic waves !
Other topics discussed include the possible on-coming “Japanese Storm” to the WSL CT Competition, and the effect of the Igarashi tsunami.
On a more poignant note, Keith talks about his new role coaching rugby to Kamaishi Seawaves. When coaching he stays in “ Unosumai “ which was one of the places devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami and he talks about the spirit of the people in this town, the new memorial rugby stadium and the effect the tsunami had on the surfing community on that eastern seaboard.
